About this plant
Syringa prestoniae, commonly known as the Preston lilac, is a hardy deciduous ornamental shrub belonging to the olive family Oleaceae. Growing up to three meters tall, this resilient hybrid produces abundant clusters of fragrant pink to purple flowers in late spring, specifically in May and June. It thrives in full sun and medium-moisture loamy or chalky soils, perfectly suited for temperate regions falling within USDA zones 3 through 7. Because of its non-toxic nature, attractive foliage, and strong appeal to pollinating insects, it serves as a wonderful addition to northern gardens.

Pruning & Maintenance
Pruning should be performed immediately after flowering finishes in early summer, as flower buds for the following year are set during the summer months. Removing spent flower clusters prevents seed production and encourages stronger vegetative growth and more profuse blooms the subsequent season. Older overgrown stems can be selectively removed at ground level to rejuvenate the shrub over a period of several years.
Landscape Uses
- Ideal for creating flowering privacy screens or informal hedges
- Excellent specimen plant in lawn areas or shrub borders
- Compatible with other cold-hardy deciduous shrubs and perennials
